The was—is—ever—shall—be of cosmic reproductivity — 2022
The video installation The was—is—ever—shall—be of cosmic reproductivity is part of an ongoing research on pastoralism and the political agency of non-human animals. The work follows a research on the strikes that shepherds from the Italian island of Sardinia carried out in 2019 to protest against the low prices paid by cheese factories for their sheep milk. The installation combines video with slide projection and prints. The short analogue video, filmed in Super 8 in the autumn of 2021, depicts the birth of a lamb on the island. This brief unscripted scene is shown alongside prints of stills taken from online footage of the shepherds’ protests, as well as a projection of milk drops poured and dried over film slides. All these “fragments” are brought into relation with each other, resulting in a composition which, as a whole, sparks reflections on topics of non-human animals’ production and reproduction labour, placing them within the framework of agro-pastoral struggles against capitalist accumulation.
