Cristina Lavosi (b. 1993, Italy) is a research-based visual artist and filmmaker living and working in The Hague, The Netherlands. Her artistic research critically examines and re-imagines Western prevailing systems of political organisation, especially in areas such as law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and (re)production labour. Her work investigates how political and cultural institutions shape dominant narratives, enforce norms of life, and legitimise violent power structures. Being directed at dismantling hegemonic ideologies, her practice is also committed to a transformative and participatory approach to storytelling and filmmaking. Through collective speculative practices and participatory world-building, she seeks to imagine and effectively articulate alternative social imaginaries. Her artistic language spans film and audiovisual installation.
Her works have been exhibited internationally, including at British School at Rome (IT), BAK Utrecht (NL), Filmhuis Den Haag (NL), Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen (DE), Kinemastik (MT), and Jatiwangi art Factory (ID). Her work has been awarded with prizes and funds from Dutch and Italian institutions such as Mondriaan Fonds, Stroom Den Haag, and SIAE. She is also co-founder of First Cut, an artist-run initiative curating screenings of experimental video art, and a member of Filmwerkplaats in Rotterdam, an artist-run film lab dedicated to analogue film practices.
